ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Nurse Betsy Adams took care of a baby born prematurely 24 year ago.
The infant's name? Victoria Phan.
She was born at just 26 weeks and weighed only one pound, fourteen ounces.
Victoria was tiny but strong.
“When you look into a baby’s eyes, you fall in, and that’s it,” says Adams, a 34-year veteran of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg.

A few months ago, Betsy received word she was about to get a new NICU nurse trainee.
Her name? Victoria Phan.
“That sounds familiar,” Adams thought.
Sure enough, the preemie she cared for all those years ago is now a determined young woman following in her footsteps at the very same hospital .
“My mom always told me stories of how I was her miracle baby,” says Phan.
The 24-year-old now wants to care for other miracle babies — with her favorite nurse by her side.
“She’s going to be great, because she has that passion,” says Adams. “We still have that special connection.”
